As speech-language pathologists who provide consultative services to children and adults with significant disabilities, we often review intervention plans that include objects in choice making or scheduling. This In FOCUS contribution considers the role of object experiences in the development of representational abilities. There are several well-known intervention techniques for individuals with severe intellectual disabilities that include the use of objects. Interestingly, most object-related interventions assume some level of object awareness on the part of the learner. The purpose of this article is to suggest that object-related interventions for individuals with severe intellectual disabilities begin with object exposure designed to create iconic and indexical associations central to eventual dual representation. It is our contention that the simple recommendations presented here will increase the success of long-standing instructional programs for object use that have assumed some degree of symbolic capacity on the part of the learner.
