- Sammanfattning
This research focused on parents & children coping with autism during transitional phases & the perceptions of stress & support offered by social workers & various professionals. A structured survey consisting of 3 quantitative instruments was developed & utilized in which 120 parents representing 3 groups participated in a survey. Findings suggest moderate levels of stress for parents, the family, & the individual coping with autism during transitional phases. Parental perceptions of support suggest that social workers should have more contact with families during a transitional phase, & that families would welcome this support. In addition, parents identified & gave similar perceived support ratings for social workers, psychiatrists, psychologists, general education teachers, & school administrators, while special education teachers received the highest support rating. These findings suggest the need for future research concerning the types of support services needed by families coping with autism during transitional phases & suggest improvements in service delivery by social work practitioners. 4 Tables, 37 References.
