Discusses how functional analysis may be useful for determining the functions of all communicative behaviors, whether they are aberrant or not. The approach reveals that learners with severe disabilities acquire unique and idiosyncratic communicative behavior and that the behavior acquired is influenced by the social contexts in which the learners reside and by the ways that social partners respond to their communicative efforts. Two case examples (15-yr-old boy with autism; 5-yr-old girl with autism, Rett syndrome, and severe mental retardation) illustrate implementation of the 3 components of functional analysis: interviews, direct observation, and analog probes. Information from each component contributes to development of intervention plans addressing communication needs. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved)
